In July 2012 100 young people came to Z-arts to take part in an evening of creative sessions. The aim was for them to come together through creativity, meet new people and get a feel for what things might be like at University. We had Mind On Fire crew DJing in the Atrium, One69a t-shirt printing in the gallery as well as sessions in breakdance, music production and Mccing plus the music studio was open for live jamming… the venue was buzzing, what a night!

iPads for music project
iPads for Music was a creative ICT project we delivered at Lache Primary School in Chester. We wanted to explore the use of iPads, specifically the software application Garageband in teaching music production to Key Stage 2 pupils. It was important that the project included live elements, a compositional focus and live instrument tuition.
Beginning with Steel Pan workshops, pupils worked with professional recording studio The Faktory to record their finished pieces. Pupils were then introduced to Garageband software, learning to edit, copy, loop clips of audio and produce their own soundscapes. The finished soundscapes included found sounds collected around the school, electronic loops, live instruments and vocal samples. iPads were a great and portable educational tool to collect, sample and edit sounds and start to compose their own pieces incorporating musical and ICT skills and were accessible to all children.

Midnight Bats
Midnight Bats was a sound installation and 3d sculpture piece for the exhibition Staff Room 2. The viewer/listener climbed inside the sound pod and placed headphones over their ears. Closing your eyes you can hear the atmospheric mantra echoing around the temple coupled with the sound of bats flying and squeaking overhead. The sound piece was recorded in a Jain temple in Hampi, India and I wanted to create a calm yet closed environment in which to listen to the piece, particularly as this was in a white box gallery setting. The pod itself is made from willow and tissue paper… I wanted to evoke a meditative environment that would transport the listener to another place or space. Have a listen…
